Nevertheless there remains the exaggerated rhetoric of those who seem to be afraid of more than one man or one mosque, but a group of people who are “other”.I sympathize with those who lost loved ones on 9/11. I cannot begin to imagine their pain. But pain does not make it okay to deny basic rights and freedoms to those who we think are not like us. How many of us actually know someone who is a Muslim? How many of us have actually read the Qur’an?
We decided some time ago to take prayer out of the schools. Fine. But I wonder if things would be a little different with some religion in the schools. What if our children studied the three major religions in high school? It seems we have raised and continue to raise a nation of spiritually illiterate folk. Many of us barely know what Christianity is let alone Islam or Judaism! The three major religions share the same God and even the same father of nations, Abraham. That ought to be enough for us to get over all this and work together for peace.
