Maybe One Day
My heart goes out to the family of the young man, Tyler Clementi, who recently committed suicide after his homosexual lifestyle was made public. To be specific, a sexual encounter that he had with a man was posted online in its entirety. After he became aware of it he jumped into the Hudson river to his death. It is difficult to imagine that people can be so heartless and cruel. Just because we can does not mean we should. We have the technological capability to record and broadcast anything to anyone anywhere in the world, but when this capability is abused, then the end result it all too often tragic.In recent discussions about this tragedy, many have referred to suicide induced bullying as an epidemic. Sadly, Tyler was the fourth teen in three weeks to committ suicide. While I genuinely sympathize with teens who are led to committ suicide because they are on the receiving end of bullying regarding their sexual orientation, intially I had doubts about whether or not “epidemic” was the best word to describe their plight. It seemed to me that the word, “epidemic” was more suited to describe the more than 130 young people dead from gang related violence in Chicago this year alone or the staggering numbers of young black and brown bodies in prison cells.
However, after giving it all some more thought, I concluded that perhaps the word, “epidemic” is relative. Perhaps actors and actresses, entertainers, and politicians refuse to remain quiet regarding the issues that are closest to home for them. Perhaps you and I really only care about those issues that directly affect us. I pray that one day we will live in a world where one does not have to be gay to care about gay rights; one does not have to be a young black male to care about gang violence or the prison industry complex; where one does not have to be unemployed to care about unemployment.
